Zen Meditation, Holotropic Breathwork and psychotherapy in dialogue exploring the various spectrums of consciousness. A GTT module open to everyone — no prior experience in Holotropic Breathwork or Zen required, yet offering a profound and deeply experiential journey on the Buddhist perspective on expanded states of consciousness. The module led by Zen Buddhist Master Dokushō Villalba will take place in English and Spanish.

THE SPECTRUM OF CONSCIOUSNESS. ZEN MEDITATION, HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORK AND PSYCHOTHERAPY IN DIALOGUE BY ZEN MASTER DOKUSHO VILLABA

No one would set out across unknown territory without a map. And yet that is precisely what we tend to do with the most intimate and the most vast territory we have been given: our own consciousness. Over the many years I have been teaching Zen meditation, I have seen people come to our temples and retreats moved by a genuine hunger for inner peace, yet with no clear idea of which nourishment they need at that particular moment of their evolution. It is out of that confusion - expecting from zazen what belongs to psychotherapy, or asking of psychotherapy what only spiritual practice can offer - that this seminar was born.

By merging into a single topography the great contemplative traditions of the East and the Western psychologies that have devoted themselves to the study of the psyche, we now have at our disposal a broad and reliable map of the spectrum of human consciousness. Within it the following can be clearly distinguished:

  • three realms of subconsciousness, self-consciousness and superconsciousness;
  • three zones: the pre-biographical, prior to birth; the biographical, running from birth to the logical-existential level; and the trans-biographical, that of the higher states of consciousness
  • and twelve layers or basic structures. These range from the karmic tendencies that precede conception to the psychic, subtle and causal realities, passing through gestation and birth, the physical-sensory and the emotional-sexual levels, and the successive unfoldings of the mind. Beyond them all lies Ultimate Reality, which is not one more level but the very essence of all of them: the Emptiness that sustains everything manifested.

Each layer emerges in its own time and has its own logic, its characteristic pathologies and the treatments appropriate to it. And once it has emerged it does not disappear: it goes on acting within us with relative autonomy, even after it has been transcended. A higher layer does not cancel out the earlier ones; it includes and transcends them. Understanding this has very concrete consequences. Confusing the levels - mistaking the pre-personal for the trans-personal, regression for transcendence - is one of the most frequent sources of confusion in contemporary spiritual life. There is a healthy spirituality and there is a pathological spirituality: when body, emotion and mind have not been integrated into a coherent whole, the unresolved structures act as filters that distort and limit spiritual experience. Hence the profound complementarity between the therapeutic and the contemplative paths, which this seminar sets out to make evident.

Over six days we shall travel this map layer by layer. But this is not a theoretical exercise. Each day brings together three languages that need one another. The morning opens with the practice of zazen, seated and walking, followed by two sessions of presentation and dialogue in which we shall unfold the twelve layers of consciousness, their dynamics, their shadows and their paths of healing. The afternoon is given over entirely to Holotropic Breathwork, the method developed by Stanislav Grof for gaining safe access to the deeper strata of the psyche, guided by GTT staff, and closes with a sharing circle where what has been experienced finds words and welcome. The day ends, once again, in the silence of meditation. On Sunday, after the return to the source, the guided meditation “Journey to the Clear Light” will gather up the work of the whole week. The sustained rhythm of these six days - silence, deep breathing, study and shared speech, in the natural setting of the valley where the temple stands - is not an addition to the content: it is the way in which that content ceases to be a theory about consciousness and becomes a direct experience of it.

The seminar is addressed to meditation practitioners who wish to situate their experience within a wider framework of understanding; to psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists and caregivers interested in the transpersonal dimension of their work; and to anyone who, going through a vital, existential or spiritual crisis, is seeking to find their bearings with clarity within their own process. No previous experience of Zen meditation or Holotropic Breathwork is required: the first session introduces the practice of zazen, and the first afternoon covers the practical aspects of the breathing. What is asked, however, is the availability to stay for the full six days: the process has an architecture that holds together from beginning to end.

Buddhism teaches that all beings seek happiness, and that suffering may be experienced in the body, in the emotions and at the very root of existing. No single path covers that whole spectrum on its own. Learning to recognise which layer we are in, what hurts there and which tool belongs to it is perhaps the most practical learning there is. That is what we invite you to: a week of silence, breath and shared words at Luz Serena, to travel together the adventure of consciousness.

  • tres ámbitos: subconsciencia, autoconciencia y superconciencia;
  • tres zonas: la prebiográfica (anterior al nacimiento), la biográfica (desde el nacimiento hasta el nivel lógico-existencial) y la transbiográfica (correspondiente a los estados superiores de conciencia);
